Lapindo Responsible Even After Sold to Lyte Ltd

Indonesia's Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro stressed that Lapindo Brantas Inc should still be held resposible for the hot mud mishap even after the caompany is sold to Lyte Ltd.

''The label , as contained in the original contract, is Lapindo and regardless of who has bought it, Lapindo is responsible,'' he said during a friendly get-together welcoming the fasting month of Ramadhan at his office here Thursday (21/9).

If Lapindo goes bankrupt the company should have the necessary documents needed for bankruptcy.

The minister said that Lapindo had up to Monday (18/9) spent US$ 77 million on the Lapindo hot mud disaster. More funds are needed for resettlement of the victims.

Asked whether the US$ 77 million included funds contributed by Lapindos trading partners Santos and Medco, Yusgiantoro said he was not informed.

Commenting on a Greenomics report that a total of Rp 33 trillion had been spent on the handling of the mud disaster, the minister said it was not a big sum at all.

PT Energi finally sold Lapindo to Lyte Ltd., a subsidiary of the Bakrie Group. No details are immediately available concerning Lyte but the company was said to be financially in a position to acquire Lapindo.
